Harrist is associate professor of art and archarology at Columbia University in New York City.
Wen C. Fong is professor emeritus of Chinese art history at Princeton University, where he taught from 1954 to 1999, established the country's first PhD program in Chinese and Japanese art and archaeology, and served for many years as faculty curator of Asian art at the Princeton University Art Museum. He also served as consultative chairman of the Department of Asian Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for three decades before retiring in 2000. His many books include "Images of the Mind", "Beyond Representation", and "Possessing the Past".

Expecting to see the "intruders" overwhelming the prior organisms or be rejected, he was astonished to discover the intruders and "indigenous" organisms fit in without rancour. What makes this book essential reading is the personal nature of the writing, connections, and the concept of "design addressing itself to the need."
Much of this personal nature is expressed in the chapter on the life of Charles Eames and Ray Kaiser before their meeting at Cranbrook, including extensive writing on each family history. Harlan's comment in the introduction, remarking on Stanley Kubrick's philosophy of filmmaking: 'First love it, and then worry about how to do it.'
