What makes me sadder still is the knowledge that were I born in that time, I'd almost certainly have gone along to get along myself - I might not have participated in the mob violence against black citizens, but I'm sure I'd have sat back and said "well, if they just knew their place" Awful! Awful, rotten people!
Sam Battle most certainly did not know his "place" and by this account, showed what it took for one man to fight, scrap, and pull himself up when most every odd was against him. As a general cofee table book it's a welcome addition, but those early teasers promising the 'real story' with suggestions that the popular mythology was quite wide of the mark have really not lived up to expectations and there are no significant revelations.
